Digital signage on Amazon Fire TV

Works well. The most reliable inexpensive option, because the browser is a real one.

Also sold as: Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube, Toshiba / Insignia / Amazon Fire TV Edition sets

Browser built in

The browser

Amazon Silk — Silk is a full Chromium-based browser and handles the player properly. If it is not already on the device, install Silk Browser free from the Appstore. Newer Fire TV hardware has begun shipping a rebuilt OS (Vega) where Silk may not be offered — if you cannot find it, treat that device as a no-browser platform and use the guidance under Roku.

Opening the player

  1. Open Silk Browser from the app row (search the Appstore for "Silk Browser" if it is not installed).
  2. Select the address bar and enter play.sheencast.com
  3. On your computer, sign in at app.sheencast.com, open Screens, choose this screen, and click Generate Pairing Code. Type the digits it shows into the box on the TV. Codes last 10 minutes — use New Code if it runs out.
  4. Bookmark the page, then set it as the Silk home page (Settings → Set homepage → current page) so a reboot returns to the player instead of a blank tab.
  5. Optional but recommended: enable full-screen mode from the Silk menu so no browser chrome shows on the wall.

Settings that keep the screen on

SettingWhereWhy
ScreensaverSettings → Display & Sounds → Screensaver → Start TimeSet to Never if offered, otherwise the longest available delay. The Amazon photo screensaver is the single most common cause of a Fire TV "going blank" on a wall.
Device sleepSettings → Display & Sounds → Screensaver, and Settings → My Fire TV / Device & SoftwareLook for a sleep or auto-off delay and set it as long as possible. Wording moves between Display & Sounds and My Fire TV depending on the Fire OS version.
Data monitoringSettings → Preferences → Data Monitoring → OffNot a power setting, but when it is on Fire OS can interrupt long-running playback with a data-usage prompt.

Worth knowing

  • Fire TV will apply OS updates and reboot on its own. Setting the player as the Silk homepage is what makes the screen recover unattended.
  • A long-idle Fire TV can show an "Are you still watching?" style prompt. Disabling the screensaver removes the usual trigger.
